Rare daytime fireball spotted in skies over Alabama, 4 other states
Social media users are sharing pictures and videos of a meteor that was captured in multiple states streaking across the sky Thursday.
The object described as a “fiery ball” was seen by people in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and northern parts of Alabama.
According to NASA, the fiery object was a fragmentation of a bolide, or large meteor, that fell across the southeastern portion of the country.
Many uploaded pictures, videos and posts asking others if they saw or felt the object. According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Peachtree City Georgia, the feeling of an earthquake that individual’s reported was due to a sonic boom created by the meteor.
According to CNN, The American Meteor Society said that Thursday’s fireball was a rare occurrence as it reached a magnitude of around -14 which would make it brighter than the full moon.
“It looks to be a ‘daytime fireball’ that caused a sonic boom,” Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, told CNN. “This is usually indicative of a (meteor) dropping a fireball, but not always.”
