Rapper MoneySign Suede stabbed to death in California prison shower
Officials confirmed the death of a popular young L.A. rapper known as MoneySign Suede after he was reportedly stabbed in the showers at a California prison on Tuesday evening.
The incident took place at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, where he was serving a 32-month sentence for a pair of gun charges, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The rapper, whose real name is Jaime Brugada Valdez, was originally from Huntington Park in California. He had received support from fans and other artists in the weeks leading up to his death, calling for him to be released from prison via posts on social media.
“People are very shocked,” said Nicholas Rosenberg, Valdez’s attorney. “He was a very popular guy, very mild-mannered. People loved him.”
Valdez was found unresponsive just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, after officers found he was not in his cell during a regular count.
He was later discovered “with injuries consistent with a homicide,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated.
The attack was reportedly a stabbing in the neck, and an investigation is now being launched by by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Monterey County district attorney’s office.
One prisoner who spoke with the LA Times said the killing took place in a section of the prison that houses general population inmates.
When news of the death broke Wednesday, fans and artists flocked to social media to remember the Mexican-American rapper.
“LONGLIVESUEDE,” said the Los Angeles rapper Peysoh, in one Instagram post.
The rapper was just 22 years old at the time of his death, reports TMZ.
