Ranking Jalen Milroe’s top 5 games as Alabama’s starting QB
Alabama football will have to find a new quarterback for the 2025 season. Jalen Milroe announced Thursday that he’ll be entering the NFL Draft, after two seasons as the Crimson Tide’s starter.
Milroe leaves behind a fairly complicated legacy in Tuscaloosa. However, he had his share of legendary moments while leading the Tide.
As he begins to prep for the next level, here is a look at Milroe’s top five moments as Alabama’s starting quarterback.
5. 2023 vs. Georgia (SEC championship game)
The highest Alabama ascended during Milroe’s tenure as starting quarterback. Georgia entered the game favored, and playing in front of a friendly crowd in Atlanta.
Milroe and the Crimson Tide earned Nick Saban’s final victory, snapping a 29-game UGA win streak. The win earned Alabama a spot in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal.
The quarterback went 13-for-23 passing in the game, with two touchdowns and an interception.
4. 2023 vs. Ole Miss
After struggling against Texas in Week 2 of 2023, Milroe was benched against South Florida, where Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson split time. After the Crimson Tide sputtered in the far-too-close win, Milroe returned to the starting role for SEC play.
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was confident and in rare trolling form the week of the game, claiming UA defensive coordinator Kevin Steele wasn’t calling the plays. Against that backdrop, Milroe recovered from his Texas issues, steadied the Crimson Tide ship and set the tone for the rest of the season.
Milroe threw for 225 yards and a touchdown, and Alabama dispatched the Rebels 24-10. The Tide wouldn’t lose again until the CFP.
3. 2024 vs. Georgia
The first big test of the Kalen DeBoer era came to start SEC play, against Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs. For the first half, Alabama seemed invincible.
Milroe finished the game 27-of-33, for 374 yards and two touchdowns. He added another 117 yards and two scores on the ground.
Of course, the game will be most remembered for Milroe’s touchdown throw to Ryan Williams in the final minutes to fight off a Georgia comeback. Alabama won 41-34, and took the No.1 ranking, at least until it ran into Vanderbilt the next week.
2. 2024 at LSU
Brian Kelly and the Tigers never had what it took to stop Milroe. In the 2023 game in Tuscaloosa, Milroe scored four touchdowns on the ground, helping the Tide to a 42-28 win.
The next year, facing a ranked LSU team in Death Valley at night, the quarterback was even better. LSU had no answer for Milroe’s rushing ability, and he finished with 185 yards on the ground, and another four scores.
Alabama blew out the Tigers 42-13, and seemed to have arrived as a CFP contender.
1. 2023 at Auburn
Hardly anything goes according to plan at Jordan-Hare Stadium. In the 2023 Iron Bowl, Auburn led most of the way, and had nearly closed out Alabama, after a bad snap led to UA facing 4th-and-goal from the Tiger 31, down 24-20 with less than a minute remaining.
Milroe stepped back to run a play known as “Gravedigger,” with all day to throw after Auburn opted for a limited pass rush. He found Isaiah Bond in the back of the end zone, Bond made the catch, and cemented both of their places in Iron Bowl history.
The 27-24 win put Alabama in the SEC championship game.
