Randall Woodfin dismisses idea to widen I-65, prefers high-speed rail

Choo-choo!

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is not all aboard the idea to widen I-65 from Huntsville to Mobile, saying Monday that he prefers investing in high-speed rail instead.

“Instead of pouring millions into widening I-65 — which studies show won’t alleviate congestion — why not invest in high-speed rail?” Woodifn tweeted Monday. “We can connect communities, reduce traffic, & make AL a leader in sustainable infrastructure. A train to the beach is way better than driving!”

Woodfin’s office could not immediately be reached for statistics to backup his assertion that widening the interstate won’t help with congestion. The mayor’s office was also asked for the projected price tag on high-speed rail.

The idea of making I-65 six lanes from Huntsville to Mobile picked up steam after Donald Trump promised to get to work on the project on the “first day” of his administration should he win the 2024 election.

Trump made the pledge while giving the keynote speech Friday night at the Alabama Republican Party’s Summer Dinner on Friday at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery.

The project is also championed by Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, a potential 2026 governor’s candidate. He has raised concerns before over what he said is a lack of prioritizing a widening of I-65 from the Tennessee state line to Mobile. The most recent example came in May, when he said widening I-65 “must be a top priority” for Alabama officials.
