Randall Woodfin calls Tyre Nichols police body cam video ‘chilling’
The video showing the death of Tyre Nichols while in police custody is “chilling,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said Friday as he called for police reform.
“The video of the killing of Tyre Nichols is chilling. It’s a blatant, horrifying display of the evils of police brutality,” the mayor tweeted shortly after the video was released Friday. “This vicious cruelty must not be our norm. Our country demands police reform. His family deserves justice.”
Nichols, 29, died in Tennessee three days after a confrontation with Memphis police officers during a traffic stop on Jan. 7. Five police officers have been fired and charged with murder in Nichols’ death.
Nichols’ family urged for peaceful demonstrations after Memphis officials released the body cam footage.
“We do not want any type of uproar. We do not want any type of disturbance,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather, according to Fox News. “We want peaceful protests.
Woodfin’s statement came after Birmingham police issued similar remarks on Nichols’ death in which they condemned the officers’ behavior.
“At The Birmingham Police Department, we share in holding all our officers to a higher standard of displaying our motto of commitment, excellence, and integrity in every situation that our officers are placed in,’’ said Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond. “We do not condone the actions that these former officers took and will remain firm in our stance that as a department, we will follow and uphold a true moral compass in all our actions.”
