Defending Class 5A state champion Ramsay looked every bit the part on Friday at Legion Field.

The second-ranked Rams ran at, over and around fifth-ranked Leeds on offense and shut the Green Wave down on defense, on the way to a surprisingly easy 42-7 victory.

The win sends the Rams (10-2) to the third round of the AHSAA playoffs where they’ll host Moody in the quest to repeat.

“I love the way our guys came out and played and fought,” said Ramsay coach Ronnie Jackson.

Leeds wraps up its season at 9-3.

“They just whipped us,” said Leeds coach Jerry Hood. “That’s all you can say.”

Big plays keyed the Rams.

Tailbacks Ashton Ashford and Jayden Martin gashed the normally stout Green Wave defense for touchdowns of 33, 15, 72 and 52 yards. The pair combined for 177 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Kameron Keenan threw two touchdown passes. His first, a 73-yard catch and run to Tremell Washington on a screen pass in the second quarter, broke the game open by giving Ramsay a 21-0 lead.

The Rams defense continued it’s scoreless postseason streak for three of the four quarters.

Leeds’ only TD came in the fourth quarter, following a fumbled punt that gave the Green Wave possession at the Ramsay 8. Conner Nelson scored on an 8-yard run.

Overall, Ramsay held Nelson to 45 yards rushing and throwing, and forced a pair of Leeds turnovers to snuff out two other scoring opportunities.

“We couldn’t block them,” Hood said. “They’re awfully good.”

Jackson and the Rams can now look forward to a third-round visit from the Blue Devils.

“I know they’re (Moody) well coached, well disciplined,” Jackson said. “We’ve just got to come with the same discipline and do the same things we did tonight.”
