Raiders GM corrects Terrion Arnold: ‘Magic 8 Ball, not coin’

Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold went to the Detroit Lions with the 24th choice in the NFL Draft on April 25.

During an appearance on “The Next Round” podcast on Tuesday, Arnold said he had a 50-50 chance of joining the Las Vegas Raiders as the 13th selection.

“Actually, the Raiders coach, they called me after the draft,” Arnold said, “and they were like, ‘You know, we actually had a coin toss between you and Brock Bowers, and it landed on him.’”

Las Vegas did use the 13th pick on the Georgia tight end.

During a Thursday appearance on “NFL Total Access” on NFL Network, Raiders general manager Tom Telesco was asked how close his team came to trading into the draft’s quarterback stampede, which saw six QBs picked in the first 12 selections.

“Is this before or after the coin flip for Brock Bowers?” Telesco responded.

That turned the question from quarterbacks to Arnold’s coin-clip comment.

“Typically, I use a Magic 8 Ball and not a coin,” Telesco said. “But no, part of that draft process — and we do this really two weeks before the draft — we’ll go through all different scenarios of what could happen in the first round and how we would react to it and discuss it. When you’re picking 13, there aren’t that many scenarios to go through, so obviously we had gone through the scenario of players being gone and Brock Bowers is there, and we discussed in a small group and if that happened like, hey, we’re going to take Brock, so we had gone through the process.

“On draft day, certainly in the first round and a little bit in the second round, there’s not a whole lot of discussion when you’re on the clock because you’ve already gone through the scenario of what could play out and what you’re going to do, so that’s what happened with Brock.”

The first 14 selections in this year’s draft were offensive players, and Telesco said Las Vegas had every intention of extending the unprecedented streak when its turn came.

“We’re looking to add to our offense,” Telesco said. “We just didn’t score enough points last year, so whether it was an offensive lineman or a skill player to kind of help us move the football and score more – I think Brock can help us there.”

Arnold said on “The Next Round” podcast he was happy with the way his draft journey turned out. The Lions traded the 29th and 73rd picks in this year’s draft to the Dallas Cowboys for the 24th selection and a 2025 seventh-round pick to move into position to choose Arnold.

The selection reunited Arnold with three former Alabama teammates – defensive back Brian Branch, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receiver Jameson Williams – on the Lions roster.

“You go where you’re wanted,” Arnold said. “That right there, that fit, and as far as how the fans are, schemes that they run and just being around guys like Jamo, Jahmyr and especially Brian, like man, it was a dream come true for me.”
