Raiders fail to get Josh Jacobs deal done by deadline

A deadline passed on Monday afternoon without an announcement from the Las Vegas Raiders that the NFL team had worked out a multi-year contract with running back Josh Jacobs.

For Jacobs, that almost certainly means that if he plays in the 2023 season, it will be on a one-year, $10.091 million contract with the Raiders. It probably also means that Las Vegas will start training camp next week without the NFL’s leading rusher.

To keep Jacobs from becoming an unrestricted free agent in March, the Raiders used their 2023 franchise tag on the former Alabama standout.

Jacobs did not want to be tagged. He had hoped to work out a long-term contract with the Raiders. And if that didn’t happen, free agency might have delivered one with another team.

The tag obligated Las Vegas to pay Jacobs $10.091 million for the 2023 season. The tag also gave the Raiders until 3 p.m. CDT Monday to work out a multi-year contract with Jacobs.

With the passage of that deadline, Las Vegas can offer only a one-year contract to Jacobs, which usually means the tag tender will stand as a take-it-or-leave-it option.

The only way that Jacobs will take the field with anything other than a one-year contract in 2023 is if the Raiders rescind the franchise tag. That would turn the running back into an unrestricted free agent able to sign a multi-year contract with any team (except Las Vegas).

The Raiders could do that because Jacobs has not signed the franchise-tag offer. But that also will prevent Las Vegas from fining Jacobs for not reporting to training camp.

Las Vegas’ veteran players are scheduled to report for training camp on July 25. Jacobs did not participate in the Raiders’ offseason program.

Jacobs ran for 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns on 340 carries and caught 53 passes for 400 yards as he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage as well as rushing yards last season.

Jacobs has reached 1,000 rushing yards in three of his four seasons since joining the Raiders from Alabama as the 24th selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. He has 4,740 yards and 40 touchdowns on 1,072 rushing attempts and 160 receptions for 1,152 yards during his four NFL seasons. Jacobs earned Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and 2022 and was the first-team All-Pro running back last season.

If Jacobs were to play for the franchise-tag salary, he would be tied for the eighth-highest payday for a running back in the NFL in 2023.
