Prime time slot announced for Alabama footballâs Week 2 rematch against Texas
Alabama’s first prime-time game of the 2023 season will be under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The highly-anticipated rematch between Alabama and Texas was announced for 6 p.m. on Sept. 9, according to the Longhorns’ social media account. It will air on ESPN.
Last year,Alabama looked like it was going to suffer a Week 2 upset even after Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers injured his arm in a flashback similar to Colt McCoy’s injury in the 2010 national championship game. The Tide eventually escaped Austin with a 20-19 victory.
Former Saban assistant Steve Sarkisian will get another chance at his old employer a year after arguing the Longhorns “didn’t lose” and instead “ran out of time,” against Alabama after Will Reichard’s game-winning field goal slipped through with 15 seconds left. The Tide overcome 15 penalties, the most ever by a Saban-coached Alabama team and rallied around late heroics from Bryce Young.
This fall, Alabama won’t have Young under center and instead will feature one of Jalen Milroe, Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson as its starting quarterback.

Milroe, a native of Katy, Texas, was deemed easier competition for the Longhorns by Texas Governor Greg Abbott during a luncheon in March. Abbott predicted a 27-21 Longhorns victory with Ewers and No. 1 prospect Arch Manning leading the charge. Alabama is 7-2-1 against Texas all-time, with the Longhorns’ last win coming in the 1982 Cotton Bowl.
On Monday, Alabama announced its Week 7 game against Arkansas on Oct. 14 will be the Tide’s annual homecoming. In 2024, Alabama and Texas will resume a more regular rivalry as both Texas and Oklahoma make its entry into the Southeastern Conference.
