Presumed Alabama OC Ryan Grubb considering NFL job, per reports

The University of Alabama football program has yet to announce a single hire on Kalen DeBoer’s staff. Yet, many of the expected hires have updated their social media bios and posted delivered farewell messages to their former schools.

Ryan Grubb, the presumed offensive coordinator has done the latter, but not the former. A seemingly innocuous detail took on a new meaning on Thursday as multiple reports confirmed that Grubb is in consideration for a move back to Washington, but not in the collegiate ranks.

Instead, Grubb is in play to become the play-caller for the Seattle Seahawks, joining newly-appointed head coach Mike Macdonald, formerly defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.

Multiple outlets have confirmed Pro Football Talk’s initial report on Thursday that Grubb is “under consideration” for the NFL role. Speaking to The Seattle Times on Thursday, Macdonald said that finding an offensive coordinator with NFL experience was “not nearly top of the list.”

A year after then-Alabama head coach Nick Saban pursued Grubb for the Tide’s offensive coordinator opening, — a position that went to Tommy Rees — Grubb seemed to finally end up in Tuscaloosa as DeBoer jumped from the Huskies to the Crimson Tide.

Grubb and DeeBoer have coached together since 2007 when DeBoer hired Grubb as offensive line coach and run game coordinator. The two have been together since, with Grubb following DeBoer to Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Washington. In recent weeks, multiple members of DeBoer’s presumed staff, including Grubb, have been out recruiting.

In addition to Grubb, DeBoer is expected to bring over wide reciever coach JaMarcus Shephard, offensive line coach Scott Huff and tight ends coach Nick Sheridan from his Washington staff. DeBoer said coaches will start implementing his scheme next week.

“Those that have come with us from Washington, they certainly have an understanding of the system, what certain concepts are called, how we teach them,” DeBoer said at the Senior Bowl on Wednesday.

On Jan. 13, Grubb posted a goodbye message to Washington, confirming his desire to become UW’s next head coach. The job eventually went to Arizona’s Jedd Fisch.

On tk date, grubb posted a goodbye message signaling his desire to become washington’s head coach.

Last season, Grubb and DeBoer, both known for their offensive prowess, built the No. 11 scoring offense nationally (36.0 points per game). The Huskies had multiple star players including quarterback Michael Penix Jr., wide receiver Romee Odunze and an offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award for best overall group.
