In October 1921, President Warren G. Harding visited Birmingham less than two years before he died of a heart attack in office. His Birmingham speech was a historical one: It was the first time a sitting president came to the South and called for racial equality, according to history.com. Harding was in Alabama to help celebrate Birmingham’s sesquicentennial and spoke from a balcony at the original Tutwiler Hotel, condemning the lynchings that were common at the time.
