Presidents Day 2024: Will mail run today? Is the post office open?

Presidents Day 2024: Will mail run today? Is the post office open?

Today (Monday, Feb. 21) is Presidents Day.

The day was originally established in 1885 in recognition of the first president, Georgia Washington. The holiday became known as Presidents Day after it was moved to the 1971′s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved several holidays to Mondays to prevent mid-week work disruptions and allow for three-day weekends for federal workers.

The day is a federal holiday, meaning many offices, schools and government services will be closed.

One of the services that won’t be available is the U.S. Postal Service.

USPS will be closed Monday meaning mail won’t run and post offices are closed. Service will resume on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Presidents Day is the third holiday for the postal service this year, following New Year’s Day on Jan. 1 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 15.

Upcoming postal holidays include:

  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 27
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – Wednesday, June 19
  • Independence Day – Thursday, July 4
  • Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 2
  • Columbus Day – Monday, Oct. 14
  • Veterans Day – Monday, Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, Nov. 28
  • Christmas Day – Wednesday, Dec. 25
