President Trump approval ratings: What the latest numbers show

Roughly a week after his inauguration, President Donald Trump’s approval rating is outpacing his disapproval rating.

The poll by Echelon Insights showed 51% of respondents approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president compared to 43% who disapprove. Breaking the numbers down, 36% said they strongly approve vs. 14% who somewhat approve. Thirty-six percent said they strongly disapprove of the job the second-term Republican is doing compared to 7% who said they somewhat disapprove.

Trump’s approval ratings also were above water by 10 percentage points when it comes to handling the economy (50% approval vs. 40% disapproval) and immigration (55% vs. 40%.) His highest rankings came in his handling of foreign policy, where 50% said they approve of the president’s plans vs. 39% who disapprove.

The ratings aren’t as high when it comes to some of Trump’s more high-profile – and controversial – proposals. When asked if the U.S. should expand its territory, 54% said it should not compared to 22% who said they backed plans to grow American territory. Sixty-eight percent did not think the U.S. should make Canada the 51st state while 16% of respondents said it should.

Only 26% said they backed Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America compared to 59% who disapproved.

Fifty-percent said they also believe the U.S. should continue its policy of birthright citizenship compared to 34% who believe the policy of giving automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. should end. Fifty-six percent said they at least somewhat supported the deportation of those living in the country illegally compared to 37% who oppose deportation.

Overall, 52% said they approved of the Executive Orders Trump signed on his first day of office compared to 42% who disapproved.
