Preseason Power 25 Rankings: Tight race for No. 1 as season starts

Preseason Power 25 Rankings: Tight race for No. 1 as season starts

One point separates the top two teams in AL.com’s preseason Power 25 high school football rankings.

Reigning four-time Class 7A state champion Thompson starts 2023 where it finished 2022 – at the No. 1 spot.

However, reigning 6A champ Saraland is just one point behind. Both received two first-place votes in the opening poll.

Four AL.com high school “experts” vote each week on the Power 25, which ranks teams in Alabama regardless of classification. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, second place 24 and so on.

The AHSAA high school season officially kicks off Thursday night, and Week 1 includes several top 10 matchups.
