Preliminary hearing date set for Malcolm Simmons following domestic assault arrest

Following his July 16 arrest, Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Simmons is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 13 at 9 a.m., according to court documents obtained by AL.com.

Simmons, 20, was arrested last Wednesday on a charge of domestic assault with strangulation of suffocation. According to court records obtained by AL.com, Opelika police identified the woman as Simmons’ girlfriend and said they saw bruises on her neck when they responded to a domestic violence call that afternoon.

In a statement responding to Simmons’ arrest, an Auburn spokesperson told AL.com, “We are aware of the situation, are gathering the facts, and will address the situation.”

Simmons’ attorney, Joseph L. Dean Jr., did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Simmons was a breakout player for Auburn as a freshman in 2024. The former Benjamin Russel High School standout caught 40 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns. He was one of four blue-chip wide receivers Auburn signed in its 2024 recruiting class.

He’s the second Auburn player to be arrested in July, following DJ Barber, who was arrested on charges of trafficking in marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
