Predawn gunfire in Midfield neighborhood wounds 67-year-old man asleep in his bed

A 67-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot while he was asleep in his bed.

The shooting happened about 2 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 200 block of Seventh Street in Midfield.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said witnesses told investigators they heard multiple gunshots outside. It is believed, she said, that one of those bullets truck the victim while he was sleeping.

The victim was taken to UAB Hospital with significant injuries, Money said.

Deputies discovered that other homes had also been hit by the gunfire. No additional injuries were reported.

No one is in custody.

The shooting was the second one this weekend in the Birmingham area in which someone inside their home was wounded by gunfire fired outside their home, and likely not meant for them.

On Friday, 12-year-old suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound in a drive-by shooting on Birmingham’s east side.

That shooting happened sometime around 6:30 p.m., when Birmingham 911 began receiving Shot Spotter alerts indicating gunfire rang out in the 8300 block of Division Avenue.

The boy was found shot inside his home in the 8300 block of First Avenue South. Police said he is critical, but stable.
