Predawn Birmingham shooting leaves 1 injured, 1 dead in city’s 2nd homicide in 3 hours

A young man was killed, and a woman injured when shots rang out Sunday morning in Birmingham.

The shooting was one of two overnight that resulted in homicides.

About 2:20 a.m., said Officer Truman Fitzgerald, multiple Shot Spotter alerts were activated, indicating shots fire in the 100 block of Fourth Avenue North.

A Birmingham police officer working off duty at a nearby club hear the gunfire and went to investigate.

The officer found an adult female in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He also spotted a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire.

Inside the vehicle, the officer found a male who was unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.

The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fitzgerald said multiple rounds were fired. No arrests have been made.

Less than four hours earlier, police responded to the 5000 block of 43rd Street North after multiple residents reported hearing shots fired and seeing a person down in the back yard of a house.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead on the scene. Fitzgerald said the victim has not yet been identified but appeared to be either a juvenile or a young adult.

“We do not believe he lives in the area,’’ he said.

Investigators marked multiple shell casings in the alley that backs up to the yard where the victim was found.

Authorities have not identified a suspect or a motive.

The killings mark the city’s fifth and six homicides this year in the city. A woman shot shot to death in broad daylight on Friday.

At this time last year, the city had worked nine homicides. There have been no homicides outside of Birmingham in Jefferson County in 2023.
