Post office is making big changes starting this weekend: What you need to know

Changes in store at the U.S. Postal Service mean you will soon pay more to send a letter.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 21, the cost of a Forever Stamp – which can be used in perpetuity no matter future price changes – will go from 66 cents to 68 cents. The price of Forever Stamps last increased on July 9, 2023 when prices rose from 63 to 66 cents.

There will be no change to the price for an additional ounce per letter, which remains at 24 cents.

Other price changes include:

  • Letters – metered 1 ounce – 63 cents to 64 cents
  • Domestic postcards – 51 cents to 53 cents
  • International postcards – $1.50 to $1.55
  • International letter (1 ounce) – $1.50 to $1.55

You can also expect to pay more for certified mail, post office box rental and money order fees and the cost to purchase insurance when mailing an item.

USPS cited “inflationary pressures” as the reason for the price hikes.

“As inflationary pressures on operating expenses continue and the effects of a previously defective pricing model are still being felt, these price adjustments are needed to provide the Postal Service with much-needed revenue to achieve the financial stability sought by its Delivering for America 10-year plan. The prices of the Postal Service remain among the most affordable in the world,” USPS said in a statement.
