A man suspected to be involved in a hit-and-run Wednesday was shot dead by a Pensacola police officer during an altercation in front of a home in Cantonment, WEAR is reporting.

The shooting followed a hit-and-run earlier in the day. In the course of investigating the incident, the officer made contact with a man he believed to be the suspect in front of a home on Durant Lane, according to the report.

The officer and the unidentified man engaged in a verbal confrontation which escalated into a physical altercation, with the officer ultimately shooting the man, who police said was later pronounced dead.

Pensacola police say the officer involved believed the man he shot was the suspect in the hit-and-run, the report said.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating.
