Possible Birmingham shooting suspect arrested after hours-long police standoff

A possible shooting suspect was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with Birmingham police.

The man, whose name has not been released pending formal charges, was sought in a Friday shooting on Vinesville Road.

The victim in that case is expected to survive.

On Wednesday afternoon, Officer Truman Fitzgerald announced Thursday, a detective with the department’s Felony Assault Unit was searching for the suspect and located him in the 1700 block of Lee Avenue. The man – armed with a handgun – fled into a residence.

Patrol and task force officers surrounded the residence about 3:30 p.m.

The officers were able to talk the suspect into surrendering about 7 p.m. No one was injured in the standoff.

The man was booked into the Birmingham City Jail shortly before 9:30 p.m. and is being held on a 48-hour hold.
