Popular restaurant chain opening its first location in Mexico
California-based Tex-Mex chain Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced it plans to open a location in Mexico next year.
The Associated Press reports Chipotle is working with Alsea, a multi-brand restaurant operator in Latin America and Europe, to bring a location of its eatery to Mexico City. Alsea oversees global locations of massive American restaurant chains, including Domino’s and Starbucks.
According to AP, Chipotle’s chief business development officer, Nate Lawton said the company is “confident” that its menu will resonate with Mexican diners.
“The country’s familiarity with our ingredients and affinity for fresh food make it an attractive growth market for our company,” Lawton said in a statement.
The announcement comes amid recent rumors (and misinformation) that Chipotle is shutting down locations and going out of business. The source of the rumour was a Unión Rayo report about the closure of Farmesa Fresh Eatery, a fast-casual business Chipotle tested in 2023. The article featured an image of the Chipotle logo, sparking confusion.
In March, a spokesperson told ABC’s Good Morning America the claim Chipotle is closing restaurants is “false.”
