Popular mall retailer files bankruptcy, will close 100 stores

Popular mall retailer Express Inc. is closing around 100 stores as part of its bankruptcy restructuring.

The chain filed voluntary Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware earlier this week. At the same time, Express announced it will be sold to WHP Global and mall landlords Simon Property Group and Brookfield Properties.

The closures, which start this week, include 95 Express retail stores and all of the UpWest branded locations. All other locations remain open for business, the company said in an announcement.

Express currently operates about 542 stores.
