Popular grocery chain recalls baby food due to potential lead contamination

Publix Super Markets, Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of its GreenWise Pear, Kiwi, Spinach & Pea Baby Food due to its potential to be contaminated with elevated levels of lead.

This recall is being initiated as a result of routine sampling and is being made with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to a release from the company.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted products have been removed from all store shelves,” said Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous.

“To date, there have been no reported cases of illness. Consumers who have purchased the product in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund.”

No safe blood lead level in children has been identified and even low levels have been shown to affect learning, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most children with lead in their blood have no obvious symptoms, and a blood test is the best way to determine if a child has been exposed to lead, the CDC adds.

The recalled 4 oz. pouches have a GTIN number of 41415-00901 and a “Best If” date of 11/01/2025.

Publix customers with additional questions have been instructed to call the store’s customer care department toll-free at 1-800-242-1227 or visit publix.com.
