Popular Birmingham restaurant owners open food market

Brian and Erin Mooney, the husband-and-wife culinary team behind Tre Luna Bar & Kitchen restaurant and Tre Luna Catering, have opened a mini-market they call Tre Luna & Grocery on Birmingham’s Southside.

The grocery is at 2507 Fifth Ave. South, next to their catering headquarters.

The Mooneys said in a media release that their market is inspired by Erin’s grandfather’s butcher shop and grocery store in the small Alabama town of Maplesville and by Brian’s memories of visiting delis and markets in New York City.

The market’s grab-and-go menu features many of the Mooneys’ restaurant and catering favorites, including their pasta sauces, salad dressings, chicken salad, pimento cheese, tomato basil soup, tuna salad, spinach-and-artichoke dip, eggplant parmesan, lasagna bolognese, meatballs, braised beef short ribs and white chocolate bread pudding.

Select market items are also available in a Tre Luna & Grocery cooler at Tre Luna Bar & Kitchen, located in The Village at Brock’s Gap retail center in Hoover.

Brian Mooney grew up in South Florida, and after he and Erin met in Fort Lauderdale, the couple moved to Erin’s hometown of Birmingham, where Brian worked for James Beard Award-winning chef Frank Stitt at Bottega before the Mooneys launched their catering business in 2014.

They opened their restaurant and bar, which AL.com featured on its 2024 list of 9 hidden Alabama restaurant gems, five years later.

The name “Tre Luna” (Italian for “three moons”) has multiple meanings for the Mooneys — a play on their last name, a tribute to their three children, as well as a nod to their restaurant’s Italian-inspired menu.

Tre Luna & Grocery is at 2507 Fifth Ave. South in Birmingham, Ala. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. For more information, go here.
