Police warn of pine straw scam that costs homeowners thousands of dollars
The Mobile Police Department is warning people of a “pine straw scam” reportedly happening in Mobile.
According to the department’s Public Affairs Manager Blake Brown, reports of the scam have surfaced in Spring Hill.
Brown said this is not the first time individuals have attempted the same con.
“You may remember we had our latest round of this late last year where a group of men charged $8 a roll, but didn’t provide the total amount due until the job was completed,” Brown said.
“Once the work wrapped up, the victims were charged upwards of $5,000 for the job, which in some cases, didn’t add up.”
According to news reports, police in both Mobile and Hoover alerted residents to the pine straw scam in December 2024.
Brown advised citizens to make sure every business is reputable and to never pay anything up front without a written agreement.
Brown said to contact Mobile police to report any suspicious activity.
