Police officer, 4 others wounded in shooting during Black Spring Break in Biloxi

A Biloxi police officer and four others were wounded by gunfire during a shooting along Biloxi beach during the final day of Black Spring Break Sunday.

Biloxi police said multiple shots were fired in the 2400 block of Beach Boulevard, near the Surf Style retail store, just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers who were already nearby patrolling Spring Break activities responded to the area of the shooting, with one officer struck in the arm as he was searching for the shooter(s).

A reporter for television station WLOX was on the scene reporting on Black Spring Break when the shots were fired, saying at least 10 shots were heard as people scrambled for cover.

The officer was treated on the scene and transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

As other officers searched the scene, they found four other victims, each of whom were also treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Biloxi police chief John Miller said later Sunday night all five victims were in stable condition, although two were in serious, but stable condition.

“He’s doing pretty good,” Miller said of his officer. The names of the officer and other victims have not been released.

In speaking with media at the scene, Miller said this year’s Black Spring Break has been rife with incidents in comparison with previous years.

“We’ve dealt with a lot of incidents this week that we usually don’t have to deal with during spring break,” he said, “and it culminated with a shooting here where several people were injured, including a police officer.”

Sunday’s shooting marked the second in as many days in the same area. Saturday night, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed on Briarfield Avenue, just north of Surf Style.

James Tarvis McMorris Jr. of Louisiana has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. It’s unknown of the two incidents are related.

In addition, there were reports of gunfire at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi Saturday afternoon, prompting the mall to close for the remainder of the day. Police later said they found no evidence of gunfire or a weapon at the mall.

In the wake of Sunday’s shooting, a massive law enforcement turnout arrived at the scene, with units from across the coast responding.

“Anytime there’s a massive shooting like this, with several people injured, you can expect that,” Miller said. “That’s how coast law enforcement works together. We always have. You can expect a lot of officers to respond — especially if there’s a police officer shot.”

Beach Boulevard (U.S. 90) from Beauvior Road to Edgewater Mall was closed for hours after the shooting. In addition, northbound traffic on Interstate 110 was restricted to one lane as police reportedly searched for a suspect vehicle.

Miller said — and a Monday press release confirmed — there have been no arrests and Miller declined to say whether there were any suspects.
