Police chase from Vestavia Hills to Leeds ends in crash; suspect, 2 officers taken to hospital

An overnight police chase from Vestavia Hills to Leeds ended in a crash and the suspect in custody.

It began at 11:52 p.m. Thursday when an officer tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Interstate 459 at Liberty Parkway.

The driver refused to stop, and the pursuit traveled along the interstate and into Leeds where the suspect wreck behind a house on Montevallo Road.

The suspect’s vehicle and two police cruisers went down an embankment into a wooded area behind the home.

Leeds police and firefighters also responded to the scene.

Vestavia Hills police Capt. Mike Keller said the suspect and two officers were taken to area hospitals to be checked out. They were all treated for minor injuries.

The suspect is in police custody awaiting formal charges.
