Police: Birmingham man kidnapped mother; reloaded gun during shooting that killed grandfather, family friend

A Birmingham man charged in the quadruple shooting that left two people dead, including his grandfather, kidnapped his own mother at gunpoint and forced her to drive him from one crime scene to the next, according to information released in court on Wednesday.

Kerry Jackson Jr., 31, is charged with capital murder of two or more victims, capital murder during a kidnapping and two counts of attempted murder.

Killed in the Aug. 8 spree were Jackson’s grandfather, 76-year-old Anthony Jackson, and family friend, 49-year-old Laquitta Charisse Dunn.

Injured were Jackson’s father, Kerry Jackson Sr., and Anthony Jackson’s longtime girlfriend, who is in her 80s.

Jackson Jr. appeared in court Wednesday morning to hear the allegations against him.

Family members of Kerry Jackson Jr. and the victims filled up more than two courtroom benches and included Bettey Jackson, the suspect’s mother and kidnap victim, who was there in support of her son.

Birmingham homicide Det. Kristopher Hatcher was the lone witness in the hearing.

When it was over, Jefferson County District Judge William Bell ruled there was enough probable cause to forward the case to a grand jury for indictment consideration.

“Based on the testimony I’ve heard today, Mr. Jackson, it’s clear to me you are the person responsible for all four people shot,’’ the judge said.

The bloodshed began at 4:45 p.m. that Thursday at a home in the 1600 block of Dennison Avenue.

Hatcher testified that multiple people were at the home the day.

The suspect’s parents, Kerry Jackson Sr. and Bettey Jackson, left the house to go get food for the suspect’s grandmother, Bessie Jackson.

While they were gone, Bessie Jackson told investigators, she was watching television and noticed that Kerry Jackson Jr. was walking around the house with a gun. Bessie Jackson eventually asked him if something was wrong,

“He was acting a little strange,’’ Hatcher testified.

Moments later, shots rang out.

Dunn, who was in the kitchen area, was struck multiple times and pronounced dead on the scene.

In the meantime, the suspects parents had stopped at the 17th Place S.W. home to see if Anthony Jackson and his friend wanted them to pick them up food as well.

That’s when Bettey Jackson received a call stating that Kerry Jackson Jr. had shot Dunn.

They rushed back to their own home on Dennison Avenue to see what was going on.

Kerry Jackson Sr. got out of the car. That’s when his son shot him multiple times while exiting the house, the detective said.

Kerry Jackson Jr. then put a gun to his mother’s head and ordered her to drive him to the 17th Place S.W. house, which was just a couple of blocks away.

She pulled into an alley behind the house, and her son told her not to leave or he would shoot her, Hatcher testified.

Bettey Jackson heard gunshots erupt after her son entered that home and she fled. She stopped at a nearby gas station for help but when she couldn’t find anyone, she called 911 and went back to her own house on Dennison.

Kerry Jackson Sr. was shot multiple times and hospitalized with critical injuries. He is now recovering and is in rehabilitation.

Anthony Jackson was pronounced dead at the 17th Place S.W. residence, and the surviving woman was also hospitalized but survived. Both victims were found in the basement area, the detective said.

Hatcher said the black revolver believed to have been used in both shootings was found behind a shed at the 17th Place S.W. home.

The detective didn’t immediately know the number of shots fired at both locations. Under questioning by Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Charissa Henrich, he said it was enough that Kerry Jackson Jr. had to reload his gun at least one time.

The suspect fled before police arrived but was taken into custody in Five Points West about 9:15 p.m. after a massive search that included Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter.

Hatcher said detectives tried to interview Kerry Jackson Jr.

“He was emotional,’’ Hatcher said, “and eventually refused to speak.”

Kerry Jackson Jr. is represented by attorneys Maston Evans and Chris Daniel.

Authorities have not confirmed a motive in the shooting spree, but Kerry Jackson Jr.’s mother said her son struggled with drug use and had been involved with some kind of rituals. Family previously told police he just “snapped.”

Kerry Jackson Jr. remains held without bond.
