Playoff roundup: Top-ranked Springville, Leeds earn close wins to advance
Class 5A top-ranked Springville used a walk and two seventh-inning errors to secure a 5-4 Game 3 victory over fifth-ranked Northside on Saturday. Springville will meet Lawrence County in the second round of the AHSAA playoffs.
The host Tigers (28-5) opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk by Kade Wills and Ryan King’s bunt was misplayed, sending Willis to third. A walk to Sean Nichols loaded the bases and Grant Martinez’s fly to left field resulted in an error and the game-winning run.
Springville led 4-3 going into the final inning, but a 2-out walk by Northside’s Austin Kightlinger led to an errant pickoff attempt and Judd Sanford singled to tie the game.
The Tigers trailed 3-1 after 2 innings, but a 2-run single by Kevin Jones – his lone hit – in the bottom of the fourth tied the game and King’s ground out scored Jones to give Springville a 4-3 lead that held until the seventh.
Springville’s Willis was 2-for-3 and scored the game-winner while Jake Conner was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Starter Willis pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 4 runs – only 1 earned – on 8 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
King got the win in relief after coaxing a groundout in the seventh.
Kightlinger was 2-for-3 with a 2-run double to give Northside its 3-1 lead in the second inning and also scored twice.
Bennett Green was 2-for-3 with a double while Sanford had the game-tying single in the seventh.

CLASS 5A
Leeds 1, Moody 0
The Green Wave knocked off rival Moody at home on Saturday to advance to the second round of the playoffs as Ryder Chambers shut down the Blue Devils on 1 hit.
The Leeds pitcher struck out 6 and walked 2 batters in his complete-game effort.
The Green Wave snapped the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a 2-out run. After a leadoff ground out, Nash Jones earned a 2-strike walk and went to second – after a strikeout – on defensive interference. He scored on a single by Graham Gulock.
Gulock was 2-for-2 on the day with the RBI. Conner Nelson, Grayson Ford, Chambers and William Thomas had singles for Leeds (23-12).
No. 9 hitter Cole Self got the hit for Moody (15-18), a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning.
Landon Cherry took the loss, allowing the earned run on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks in 6 innings.
Leeds will meet Madison Academy in the second round.
Scottsboro 17, Boaz 6
Scottsboro knocked off Class 5A No. 7 Boaz on the road Saturday to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
Scottsboro scored 6 runs in both the sixth and the seventh innings to put the game away.
Hunter Hancock hit a pair of home runs for Scottsboro, going 2-for-5 with a game-high 5 RBIs in the win. He was one of three players with multi-hit games, led by Conner Vaden’s 3-for-4 day with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Jackson Nichols had 2 hits and 3 RBIs.
Boaz catcher Cooper Whorton went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while leadoff batter Elijah Kelly had 2 RBIs and Sage Bennett had 2 hits.
Scottsboro will face Jacksonville in the second round of the playoffs.
Jacksonville 11, John Carroll Catholic 1
Xaye Lemon scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth as Jacksonville secured a five-inning, run-rule victory over John Carroll Catholic on Saturday at home.
Jacksonville will face Scottsboro in the second round of the playoffs.
Lemon scored a team-high 4 runs in the victory, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Jackson Bonner and Sam Parker Wagoner also had 2-hit games, with Wagoner hitting a double; both Bonner and Wagoner logged a game-high 3 RBIs apiece.
Jackson Askew pitched Jacksonville to victory as he allowed four hits, one earned run and a walk across five innings of work.
John Carroll’s lone run came on an RBI single from Garrett Barnes to score Braxton Williams in the top of the fourth.
CLASS 4A
Haleyville 8, Hokes Bluff 2
The fourth-ranked Lions moved into the second round against Madison County with the home win over Hokes Bluff. Haleyville jumped to a 3-0 first-inning lead, went up 4-1 after 2 innings and led 6-2 after 5 and added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Eli Cagle went 3-for-4 for the Lions (23-7) with a triple and 5 RBIs. Leadoff hitter Jadyn Marbutt was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Cooper McNutt was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Even Howard was 2-for-2 with a run.
Cagle also earned the complete-game win, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk.
Brodie Brogdon was 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored for the Eagles (19-14). Colten Shields was 2-for-3 and Anderson Morgan and Bryce Whitaker had singles.
Bray Bearden took the loss, giving up 6 earned runs on 10 hits with 2 strikeouts over 4 innings.
Opp 14, Bayside Academy 4 (6 innings)
Second-ranked Opp scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning of Game 3 on Saturday and rolled to a series win over visiting Bayside Academy.
The Bobcats (23-5) and Admirals (17-16) split two games on Friday. Opp moves on to face Bibb County next weekend in Round 2.
Cash Harrell led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and 6 RBIs. Porter Nelson was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Nolan Brown pitched the first 5.2 innings to get the win, scattering 10 hits and allowing four runs. He walked seven and didn’t strike out a batter. Harrell got the final out.
Bayside’s TJ Bailey started and took the loss. He allowed five runs on two hits and walked four. Noah Cain was 3-for-4 for the Admirals. Weston Hannaman was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
New Hope 8, West Morgan 6
A 10-inning Game 3 in Trinity on Saturday saw New Hope outlast host West Morgan to advance to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
New Hope will face No. 3-ranked Etowah in the second round of the playoffs.
New Hope scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning, all three on walks; the first was an intentional walk on Brody Gowan, while JaDyn Drake and Drake Dempsey both drew walks of their own.
West Morgan’s Colby Jones hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th to score Maddox Maples for the final run of the game.
Grant Maples went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate for New Hope, drawing 2 walks and logging an RBI in the win; six other New Hope players had a hit, with Lucas Terry logging a pair of RBIs.
Hudson Layne picked up the win on the mound, allowing 3 hits and no earned runs (1 unearned) while walking 3 and striking out 4. Andrew Dudley pitched the first 5 innings for New Hope, allowing 4 hits and no earned runs (5 unearned) while walking 3 and striking out 5.
West Morgan’s Carter Stephens went 2-for-3 with 2 runs in the loss for the Rebels, while Jones, Titan Partlow and Jackson Alexander drove in a runner apiece.
CLASS 3A
Lauderdale County 10, Fyffe 0
Hesston Parker tossed a 1-hit, 5-inning shutout as the Tigers blanked No. 10 Fyffe in Rogersville on Saturday to earn a spot in the second round of the playoffs. Parker struck out 5 and walked 3 in Lauderdale County’s win. He also helped himself by going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs on the day.
The home team scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning and added single runs in the third and fourth before closing it out with 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lauderdale County finished with 6 hits in the win.
Hudson Lash, Jackson Hamm, Jeremiah Hutchins and Jacob Jones all had singles for the 19-13 Tigers.
Cooper Cox got Fyffe’s lone hit in the loss. Starter Clancy Fowler, the first of three Fyffe pitchers, took the loss for the Red Devils, giving up 5 runs – 3 earned – on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk in 3.1 innings.
The Red Devils finish the season at 18-8.
Lauderdale County will travel to Winfield on Thursday for a second-round doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m.
CLASS 2A
Ariton 8, Bayshore Christian 2
No. 3 Ariton remained alive for a chance at its third straight Class 2A state title with a Game 3 win over homestanding Bayshore Christian on Saturday in Fairhope.
The Purple Cats (24-9) took the lead with a run in the top of the second and never trailed. Bayshore (14-15) closed to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but Ariton scored four in the fourth to take control for good.
Easton Kilpatrick went 2-for-4 with a homer, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Wells Ganey and Pierce Gill also drove in two runs each. Austin Evans went the distance on the mound, allowed just three hits and the two runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.
Starter Nate Crooms took the loss for the Eagles, allowing five hits and seven runs – five earned – in four innings. Ben Whiteside pitched two innings and Ben Mayo got the final three outs.
Jace Jones, Blake Strickland and Casen Whiteside had hits for Bayshore.
