Player of the Week from flag football championships was two-way standout

Two Alabama High School Athletic Association flag football champions have been crowned, the first since the organization officially sanctioned the sport, with Central-Phenix City winning a second straight title in Class 6A/7A and Montgomery Catholic claiming the 1A/5A championship.

Stellar performances marked the championships and AL.com readers have picked the flag football Player of the Week from the four finalists.

The survey drew 769 votes and Moody’s Emma Kile was the top finisher with 81 percent of the total – 626 votes.

The senior quarterback was 14-for-29 passing for 164 yards and a touchdown in the Blue Devils’ loss to Montgomery Catholic. Kile, who also plays softball – where the Devils finished second in the state tournament – and basketball, led the Moody defense with 4 tackles, 2 interceptions and a pass breakup.

Montgomery Catholic senior Jamie McGuire was second in the balloting with 12 percent of the vote. She finished with 9 flag pulls, 6 for a loss, and 4 sacks in the 1A/5A title game as the Knights beat Moody 14-7.
