Playa at Sportsman Marina to close after 5 years in Orange Beach

Playa at Sportsman Marina, the Orange Beach restaurant opened five years ago by five-time James Beard-nominated Chef Bill Briand, is closing, the establishment announced Wednesday.

Playa is shuttering its doors so management can focus on Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina, the eatery’s sister restaurant.

“We would like to first say, how much we have greatly appreciated our Orange Beach and Gulf Coast community over the past 5 years,” Playa said on its Facebook page. “Unfortunately, it is time to shut our doors for good. We have decided as a company to focus our talent and energy on our sister restaurant Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina. We cannot thank you all enough for the love and support! Who knows, maybe those favorite Playa specials will make an appearance at Fisher’s! We love you all and hope to see you in the near future at Fisher’s!!”

Briand, who has been nominated five times for Best Chef in the South, and restaurateur Johnny Fisher partnered to open Playa, their third restaurant, in 2018. The partners also operate Fisher’s Dockside, the casual downstairs neighbor to Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina.

Both Playa and Fisher’s made Southern Living’s list of 10 Best Places to Eat in Orange Beach.

Playa’s crab toast was singled out by AL.com Southern food and culture writer Bob Carlton as one of the 68 Alabama dishes everyone needs to try.

“There may be no finer appetizer on the Alabama Gulf Coast,” Carlton wrote.
