Pittsburgh Steelers release former Auburn defensive tackle
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. In the fifth round on Saturday, the Steelers chose Iowa defensive tackle Yahya Black.
After picking the pair of 300-pounders, Pittsburgh released one already on its roster. On Wednesday, the Steelers announced they had released former Auburn defensive tackle Montravius Adams.
Adams had started 21 games since joining Pittsburgh with five weeks left in the 2021 season. But he did not start a game in 2024, when he missed six games because of a knee injury.
Adams played only 188 defensive snaps last season after playing a career-high 416 in 2023, although he did record his first regular-season sack since 2018 during the 2024 campaign.
Adams had one season remaining on a two-year, $5.25 million contract.
Adams has played in 96 regular-season games and five playoff contests since entering the NFL as a third-round selection of the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 draft.
Two days into his first NFL training camp in 2017, Adams had a broken foot, an injury that required surgery to insert a screw. The injury kept Adams out of practice until Sept. 5, and he didn’t play until Sept. 25. The late start limited Adams to 66 defensive snaps in seven games as a rookie.
Injuries were a theme for Adams during his four seasons with Green Bay. After Adams played in every game in 2018, he began 2019 in the Packers’ starting lineup as a defensive end in a three-man front. But after starting the first two games, Adams missed the next two because of a shoulder injury, and when he returned for Game 5, Tyler Lancaster held the starting spot. Adams’ fourth NFL season came to a premature end. He didn’t play after Nov. 15 in 2020 because of a toe injury.
Adams signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots in March 2021. The Patriots released Adams in the roster reduction between the preseason and regular season, and he joined the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans released and re-signed Adams twice during the 2021 season before Pittsburgh signed him off the Saints’ practice squad on Nov. 30, 2021.
