Piedmont QB Jack Hayes sets AHSAA career record
Piedmont senior quarterback Jack Hayes set another AHSAA career record Friday.
Hayes set a new career total offense record – breaking the record held by 2019 Mr. Football Kristian Story of Lanett – and accounted for all six Piedmont touchdowns in the 41-20 victory over Sylacauga. Story’s previous record was 13,218 yards.
“We play a style that is very quarterback-friendly,” Piedmont coach Steve Smith said. “He does a great job of using all of his playmakers, he’s had a lot of really good offensive lineman, and our guys are all very unselfish. That makes it the ultimate team game, and they all have a part in the records that he has broken. They believe in Jack, and he believes in them.”
Hayes finished with 474 yards of total offense, with 304 passing on and 170 rushing, in the Friday’s win. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more.
Earlier this season, Hayes set a new AHSAA career record for touchdowns accounted for when he broke another record held by Story, who is currently a reserve defensive back at Alabama.
Piedmont (8-2) has won four straight games entering next week’s first-round Class 3A playoff game against Oakman. Hayes needs about 500 yards passing to break the career passing yards record of 10,774 held by Williamson’s JaMarcus Russell, who was later the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.
Smith has become the fourth player in AHSAA history with 10,000 passing yards, joining Russell, American Christian’s Chris Smelley, and 2018 Mr. Football Bo Nix, who played at Pinson Valley and Scottsboro.
Hayes has led the Bulldogs to 3A state tiles in 2019 and 2021. He was also named the statewide male athlete of the year for the 2021-22 school year by AL.com.
