Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: âLast yearâs overâ
The Philadelphia Eagles want to go one rung higher on the NFL ladder in 2023 than they did in 2022.
The Eagles set a franchise record for regular-season victories and won the NFC championship before losing 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII in the 2022 campaign.

But winning Super Bowl LVIII isn’t taking only one step up for Philadelphia, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said. It’s taking all the steps from last season again plus one more.
“I think at this time of the year, thinking about it holistically, last year’s over,” Hurts said on Thursday. “… Nothing that’s been done prior will get us to where we want to be now. There’re a ton of experiences that we definitely documented and deposited in the bank, if you will, to learn from, and we will learn from and have learned from. But it’s a day-by-day thing, and I think that everybody’s taken that approach. We’re excited to just kind of continue that progression.”

From last season’s team, the Eagles lost linebackers T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, running back Miles Sanders and guard Isaac Seumalo in free agency.
Philadelphia added safety Terrell Edmunds, linebacker (and Huntsville High alumnus) Nicholas Morrow and running back Rashaad Penny in free agency, traded for running back D’Andre Swift and counted Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter and outside linebacker Nolan Smith and Alabama offensive lineman Tyler Steen among its seven draft picks.
“Every team has their own opportunity to do something special,” Hurts said, “and this is a whole entire new team, and that’s something that we’re all embracing and something that I’ve embraced. It takes a special type of discipline and work to achieve what you want to achieve. You have to completely reset that but also allow the things you’ve experienced to fuel you, fuel that fire and grow, work every day.”
Something else new for Philadelphia this season is Hurts’ contract status. With Hurts entering the final season of the four-year contract he signed as a second-round draft choice in 2020, the Eagles signed the former Alabama standout to a five-year, $255 million contract extension in April after he finished as the runner-up for The Associated Press’ 2022 NFL Most Valuable Player Award.

“Numbers may have changed, but same guy, same approach, same goals, same dream,” Hurts said of the effect of the new contract.
Philadelphia concluded its offseason program on Tuesday. The players will be on their summer break until gathering for training camp late next month.
“I think it was really good to get everybody together, meet the new guys and kind of start from ground one again,” Hurts said.
The Eagles kick off their three-game preseason schedule on Aug. 12 with a road game against the Baltimore Ravens.
