Philadelphia Eagles get more help to deal with injuries
The Philadelphia Eagles have weathered a parade of injured players to compile an eight-game winning streak. To make it nine victories in a row on Sunday, the Eagles will have a pair of players with Alabama football roots available to help weather the latest setback.
Philadelphia put Ben VanSumeren on injured reserve on Nov. 30, and Dallas Goedert followed on Saturday.
Goedert is the Eagles’ No. 1 tight end. VanSumeren is a linebacker who doubled as a fullback.
On Tuesday, Philadelphia signed former Buckhorn High School standout Khari Blasingame to its practice squad. The fullback was a free agent since being released by the Chicago Bears on Oct. 26. On Saturday, the Eagles elevated Blasingame from their practice squad, making him eligible to play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
On Wednesday, Philadelphia signed former Auburn tight end C.J. Uzomah from its practice roster to its 53-man active roster to back up Grant Calcaterra.
The Eagles needed to bring Uzomah to the active roster to keep using him. He has played in three games as a practice-squad elevation in 2024, the league limit.
“Great teammate. Glue guy,” Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said of the 10-year veteran on Friday. “Has done some nice things on special teams and has taken advantage of some of the opportunities he’s had. Had a really good play in four-minute the other day that he came through and led through on a block on a really good player and was able to get movement there.
“He just brings veteran reliability, and, again, bringing guys together on the football team. And then he’s had some big production where we know if we can throw him the ball, he can do something with it and make plays. And then what he does as a blocker.”
While Blasingame has been on the field for more special-teams plays than offensive snaps since breaking in as an undrafted blocking back for Derrick Henry with the Tennessee Titans in 2019, he has made a career as a fullback in a league where they are disappearing.
Now Blasingame could be lining up in front of the current NFL rushing leader, Saquon Barkley.
“That was big as far as the opportunity,” Blasingame told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Ben was doing a great job, and, unfortunately, he suffered the injury. But the fact that it was a growing role was a big part of the reason I came here and will be able to step in to help. I’m excited to take the growing role and keep growing it.”
In 109 NFL regular-season games since coming to the NFL from Auburn as a fifth-round selection in the 2015 draft, Uzomah has had 192 receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns.
In 66 regular-season games, Blasingame has run for 99 yards on 13 carries and caught 11 passes for 32 yards.
The Eagles play the Panthers at noon CST Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
