Philadelphia Eagles add 5 to Alabama’s list of Super Bowl winners
Thirty-seven Alabama alumni have appeared on the active rosters of Super Bowl-winning teams after the Crimson Tide added five to its collection of NFL champions on Sunday.
Alabama had come up empty on alumni on Kansas City as the Chiefs won the past two Super Bowls. But trying for three in a row on Sunday, Kansas City lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.
With five former Alabama players on its 53-man roster, Philadelphia had more Crimson Tide alumni than any other Super Bowl winner.
Three of the former Alabama players were part of the Eagles’ starting offense – left guard Landon Dickerson, quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
Offensive lineman Tyler Steen played a reserve and special-teams role, and cornerback Eli Ricks did not play on Sunday after being designated as a game-day inactive.
Steen became the 50th Alabama alumnus to play in the Super Bowl.
Hurts and Smith teamed up for a 46-yard touchdown pass – the first scoring pass caught by an Alabama alumnus in Super Bowl history.
Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and ran for 72 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.
Smith had four receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.
The Eagles had another former Alabama player on their roster for Super Bowl LIX, but defensive tackle Byron Young has been on injured reserve since Oct. 25 because of a hamstring injury and was not eligible to play on Sunday.
The previous high for Alabama active-roster players for a Super Bowl-winning team came in the NFL championship game for the 2008 season. The Pittsburgh Steelers had three Tide alumni on their active roster for a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1, 2009.
