PGA-LIV merger reaction: From Jack Nicklaus to Phil Mickelson to Donald Trump
When it was announced Tuesday the PGA Tour will merge with Saudi-backed LIV and the European Tour, the reaction fast and furious from a number of players as well as celebrities.
The new, as-yet-named entity will have its own board of directors, which will “oversee and direct all the new entity’s golf-related commercial operations, businesses and investments” and create a “cohesive” schedule of events.
“The last three years have been difficult for the game and the players,” Jack Nicklaus told The Palm Beach Post. “(PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan) seemed pleased with the arrangement that will once again bring together the best players in the world. I agree that this is good for the game of golf.”
Even Donald Trump, who predicted a merger a year ago, reacted to the news on his Truth Social platform.
“Great news from LIV golf,” he wrote. “A big, beautiful, and glamorous deal for the wonderful world of golf.”
In fact, most found out about the news the same way we did: through social media.
“And everyone thought yesterday was the longest day in golf,” tweeted Collin Morikawa, who also said he found out about the merger on Twitter.
Players who switched to LIV inked huge signing bonuses. Phil Mickelson earned a reported $200 million.
Justin Thomas, who was in the middle of a practice session, tweeted just how active his phone got with notifications.
Tyrell Hatton made an NFL reference.
