PGA Championship best bets for Friday afternoon after strange Round 1

The stars of the PGA Tour normally shine at the majors, but that’s not the case at the 2025 PGA Championship.

Thursday’s opening round ended with Jhonattan Vegas sitting atop the leaderboard at seven under par. Cam Davis and Ryan Gerard were two shots off the lead, and the most popular name in the top 10 was LIV Golf’s Tyrrell Hatton.

Scottie Scheffler is still favored to win after shooting two under par in Round 1. Pre-tournament co-favorite Rory McIlroy has a reputation for dominating at Quail Hollow Club, the PGA Championship’s host course, but had a rough start to the tournament, shooting +3

If you tailed one of the underperforming stars and are already losing confidence, you can always get back in the action with a live wager. Below are my PGA Championship best bets and predictions as we roll into Round 2.

Scottie Scheffler top 10 finish after Round 2

Best odds: +100 at DraftKings Sportsbook

Scheffler’s group was one of the earliest to tee off in Round 1, which was a massive disadvantage. Quail Hollow Club got drenched with rain earlier in the week, but the rules officials forced golfers to play mud balls after not allowing preferred lies.

Scheffler and Xander Schauffele were outspoken about the decision, noting the course conditions penalized well-placed shots that landed in fairways. The sun was out for Round 1, and the course dried out as the day went on, so players with later tee times benefited from fewer mud balls.

With no rain in the forecast today, players won’t get an advantage based on tee times. Despite the unfavorable conditions, Scheffler went two under par with four birdies and an eagle in Round 1.

Look for Scottie to shoot even lower today as he moves up the top of a leaderboard filled with inexperienced players.

Matt Fitzpatrick to win the PGA Championship

Best odds: +4500 at Caesars Sportsbook

Growing up in rainy Sheffield, England, Matt Fitzpatrick is no stranger to battling through wet course conditions. He took the mud balls in stride and finished only four strokes behind the Round 1 leader.

If Fitzpatrick keeps his foot on the gas, he’s well-positioned to remain in contention this weekend. With three missed cuts and no top 10 finishes, the 2025 season hasn’t been kind to Fitzpatrick.

A T23 finish in last week’s Truist Championship could be a sign of Fitzpatrick’s play starting to improve. He’s well above average in SG: Off-the-Tee, a key stat to consider at a lengthy course such as Quail Hollow.

He’s struggled at recent majors, but knows what it takes to rise to the occasion. Fitzpatrick’s lone major championship victory came at the 2022 U.S. Open.

Keegan Bradley Round 2 score under 71.5

Best odds: -110 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Keegan Bradley carried solid form into the tournament, finishing T18 and T30 in his last two events. He’s been up and down in recent major championships, but has a knack for performing well at the PGA Championship.

The 38-year-old recorded top 30 finishes in the past two PGA Championships and last missed the cut in 2020. That trend promises to continue for another year after Bradley turned in a 68 in the opening round, finishing T12.

Bradley carded four birdies and only one bogey on Thursday. He had no trouble getting through the green mile unscathed, shooting even par on the toughest stretch of the course (holes 16 through 18). The rest of the field combined to go 171 over par on the final three holes.

Bradley shot consecutive 70s in the first two rounds in his last trip to Quail Hollow for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, and I expect him to stay at or below the par 71 on Friday.
