Petition seeks permanent memorial to Alabama man killed in Tuscon hatchet attack
A petition is seeking a permanent memorial to an Alabama man who died last week following an attack by a man with a hatchet.
The petition, on Change.org, seeks a permanent marker for Jacob Couch, 32, of Arab, who died last Thursday from his injuries following an April 5 attack.
Couch and his wife Kristen were sitting on a bench at a Tuscon bus station April 5 at around 10 a.m. when a man reportedly approached them and began shouting at them.
According to investigators, Jacob said something to the man, who then hit Jacob in the neck with a hatchet.
The organizers of the petition say a memorial would “reassure” people that Tuscon is a safe city.
“This memorial would not only honor Jacob’s memory, but serve as a powerful and lasting reminder of the urgent need to address violence in our streets,” the petition states.
“We believe this memorial can become a symbol of peace, unity, and our shared commitment to making Tucson safer for all. It is time we show the world that we stand against violence, not just with words, but with visible action.”
Family members said the blow to Couch severed an artery in the back of his neck in half and hit his skull.
The Couchs were in Tuscon sightseeing and were about to head back to Alabama. The couple had reportedly spent the last 10 months in Los Angeles, grieving and processing the loss of their son Brooks, who was stillborn in May 2024.
Daniel Michael, 25, was arrested three days later in his home. According to court documents, investigators found a hatchet in his apartment as well as clothes they believe he wore during the incident. There is also security footage of the attack.
Michael now faces upgraded charges of first-degree murder, according to KVOA.
Couch’s brother Luke said the family plans to return to Arizona to seek justice. According to Luke, Michael told Couch to “get up” and Couch replied that Michael should “mind his own business.”
“You know, they weren’t doing anything, weren’t causing trouble,” he said. “Kristen could tell that the guy was really agitated, and so she told him they were getting up, and they were going to leave.”
According to the Daily Mail, Luke Couch said he wants to make sure “no other family has to go through what my family has gone through.”
“I just want everyone to know we are not going away,” he said. “I made a promise to my brother while he was sitting in that hospital bed that I would make sure he got justice,” said Luke.
