Pete Carroll out as Seattle Seahawks coach

After 14 seasons, Pete Carroll is out as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. But he wasn’t exactly fired.

Carroll will remain with the Seahawks as an advisor, said Jody Allen, the owner of the NFL team.

“After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise,” Allen said in a statement released by the team on Wednesday, “we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from head coach to remain with the organization as an advisor.

“Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brough the city its first Super Bowl title and created a tremendous impact over the past 14 years on the field and in the community.

“His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward.

“Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.”

Carroll is under contract with Seattle through the 2025 season, and he said during his press conference after Sunday’s 21-20 victory over Arizona Cardinals in the 2023 season finale that he intended to coach the team in 2024.

The Seahawks had a 9-8 record in 2023 but were eliminated from the playoff race on the final Sunday of the regular season.

Seattle posted a 137-89-1 regular-season record and went 10-9 in 10 postseason trips under Carroll, who is 72 years old.

The Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, 2014. The next season, Seattle lost to the New England Patriots 28-24 in Super Bowl XLIX. In that game, former West Alabama standout Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass on the Seahawks’ final snap with Seattle on the New England 1-yard line.

Carroll came to the Seahawks after nine seasons as the coach at Southern Cal. He compiled a 97-19 record, and the Trojans won the BCS national championship for the 2004 season.

Carroll also had been an NFL head coach before coming to Seattle. He went 6-10 with the New York Jets in 1994 and had a 27-21 record with the New England Patriots from 1997 through 1999.

Carroll has a 170-120-1 career record as an NFL head coach. He’s tied for 14th for coaching victories in league history.
