Person reportedly armed with knife shot to death on interstate by Opelika police

A person reportedly armed with a knife was shot to death by Opelika police on Interstate 85 Tuesday afternoon.

Officers responded at 2:35 p.m. to a report of a traffic crash involving an 18-wheeler and a car, authorities said. When they arrived, they were confronted by a person with a knife.

“The incident ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting,’’ according to an OPD press release.

The person was pronounced dead on the scene. No additional details have been released.

As is standard procedure, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency/ State Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the probe.

Once SBI agents have completed a full and thorough investigation, authorities said, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office to present to a grand jury.
