Perry Hooper ‘personally and professionally … injured’ by allegations, lawyer says

Former state representative Perry Hooper Jr. “only seeks the truth” with a lawsuit he has filed against Montgomery’s police chief and the city alleging he was set up for an arrest on a sexual abuse charge involving a restaurant hostess.

He is asking for a copy of the video of the incident that led to the charge, which his lawsuit described as “laughable” and argues should never have been filed.

“It is questionable why anyone would object to his request, as the truth speaks for itself,” a statement sent by Hooper’s attorney to AL.com on Friday reads.

“Mr. Hooper’s life, both personally and professionally, has been injured as a result of the allegations made against him,” the statement continued.

The criminal case was dismissed after the alleged victim decided not to press charges and asked for an apology from Hooper.

Hooper issued an apology.

After the lawsuit was filed, attorney Dianne James Davis said in a statement posted to social media that Hooper “will not regain his reputation” through the lawsuit. Davis said she was commenting personally and not as the attorney for Montgomery hostess Elizabeth Daly.

“No, this wasn’t a anti-Trump conspiracy against Mr. Hooper. I guess I must remind his legal team and Mr. Hooper, that he was indicted by a grand jury that witnessed the video and heard his words after his actions against the victim. I guess I also have to remind his legal team and Mr. Hooper that he acknowledged his inappropriate behavior publicly,” Davis said in her statement.

Daly later sent a statement on her own behalf.

Daly said Hooper “betrayed and violated” their agreement for her to request the charges be dropped in exchange for Hooper publicly apologizing, taking accountability “for his actions” and never speaking negatively about her.

Recounting the alleged assault, Daly said a man with Hooper told him, ‘I would never get away with doing something like that.’”

“Before I had a chance to process the assault or supportive remark and respond Mr. Hooper interjected, stating: ‘I’ll get away with it, because I am Perry Hooper’ A statement I will never forget, as I knew it was meant to serve as a warning and a boast,” Daly recalled.

Hooper, his attorney said Friday, “filed his lawsuit in order to acquire the video of the alleged incident widely reported in the media. A video, we contend, he is entitled to obtain.”

“Mr. Hooper only seeks the truth, as should everyone involved (including the media),” the statement read.
