The spokesperson went on to explain the structure of the beverage cup:

On the bottom of each quencher made by the beverage container powerhouse is a circular barrier made of stainless steel, which covers a pellet that contains lead, a spokesperson for Stanley explains. The pellet seals the product’s vacuum insulation, and it is not accessible unless the stainless steel barrier comes off — which is possible but “rare,” the Stanley spokesperson noted to TODAY.

It didn’t take long for reactions to start pouring in on social media, and Buzzfeed compiled a few of the sarcastic responses.

On X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote, “Had y’all fighting over a can of lead poisoning gotta love America.”

“The food that we eat here in the US is worse than that lead in the cup,” a TikTok user wrote.
