Pensacola teen gets 10 years for killing his mother
David Ohlson will spend a little more than 10 years in prison after a plea deal with prosecutors lessened his charge from murder to manslaughter for the April 2022 shooting death of his mother.
Ohlson was 18 when he shot his mother in the abdomen with a shotgun. She died in surgery, according to a report from the Pensacola News Journal.
Ohlson’s father witnessed the shooting, telling police he had received a call from the mother saying their son was “acting out.”
The father said he saw his son raise the shotgun and point it at him, then at the mother. As the father started moving towards his son, the teenager pulled the trigger, according to a police report obtained by the newspaper.
An arrest report also indicated Ohlson admitted to shooting his mother, telling Escambia County deputies “of all the people he planned to shoot, he did not expect his mother to be one of them,” according to the PNJ. The report also indicated Ohlson’s parents had separated three weeks prior to the shooting.
Initially charged with 2nd-degree murder, Ohlson agreed to a plea deal in May of this year under which he would plead guilty to manslaughter with a weapon.
