Pensacola man turned in by pastor set for trial on child rape charges
The trial of a Pensacola man accused of raping a young girl more than 600 times is set to begin in Escambia County (Fla.) Wednesday.
Robert Cota, 33, is charged with sexual assault, aggravated battery of a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to the Pensacola News Journal.
The assaults reportedly occurred in the late 2010s, beginning when the victim was 11 and continuing until she was 14.
Cota was arrested in November 2021 after he admitted to a pastor he was having sexual contact with the girl, according to an arrest report obtained by the newspaper. The pastor reportedly asked Cota if he was willing to repent and ask for forgiveness, to which Cota replied “No.”
The pastor encouraged Cota to turn himself in and provided law enforcement with Cota’s new member form and photo.
When the victim was interviewed by investigators, the girl estimated Cota had raped her more than 600 times over the course of roughly three years, sometimes multiple times a day, according to the report.
The aggravated assault charge levied against Cota stems from two incidents in which he reportedly pointed a gun at the girl, in one of those instances accusing the girl of having a microphone hidden in her mouth.
If found guilty on the sexual assault, Cota faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. The aggravated battery carries a maximum sentence of 30 years, while the aggravated assault charge has a five-year maximum sentence.
