Pell City gives Rush Propst his 1st win at Pell City

Pell City earned its first victory of the Rush Propst Era.

The Panthers (1-3 overall, 1-1 in Class 6A, Region 6) earned a 24-16 victory over previously undefeated Center Point (3-1, 1-1) at Pete Rick-Alumni Stadium in Pell City.

It’s the first head coaching victory in Alabama for Propst, the first-year head coach at Pell City, since he led Hoover to a 44-42 victory over Hueytown in the 2007 AHSAA Class 6A playoffs. He has since coached at Colquitt County and Valdosta in Georgia before returning to the AHSAA ranks this season.

Pell City scored just 31 points in its first three games to Moody, Leeds and Clay-Chalkville, all losses, before beating Center Point.

Pell City built a 10-8 lead at halftime and pushed the lead to 17-8 at the end of the third quarter. Center PoInt’s Terence Tubbs returned a fumble for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and the Eagles scored the 2-point conversion to make it 17-16.

Pell City replied with another touchdown to make it 24-16.

Antonio Garfield also scored on a 4-yard run in the first half for Center Point.

Pell City is open next week and plays at Eufuala on Sept. 29. Center Point returns to action next week against Clay-Chalkville.
