Pelham school resource officer on leave after possible inappropriate text messages with student

A Pelham police officer is under investigation and on leave following potentially inappropriate messages with a student.

Authorities have not identified the school resource officer and have not announced any criminal charges.

Police Chief Brent Sugg in a Saturday press release said the department on Wednesday received information from the parent of a former student at Pelham Park Middle School.

The parent reported that a student had communicated via text messages with the middle school’s resource officer. “The messages were from late May 2024 and may be deemed inappropriate,’’ Sugg’s statement read.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave and has not been at the school since Wednesday. The chief said there is no indication at this time that any physical contact took place or was suggested.

“The primary concern for the Pelham Police Department and Pelham City Schools is the safety and security of our children,’’ the release stated. “The department is in constant contact with Pelham City Schools regarding the situation and continues to have an officer assigned to Pelham Park Middle School.”
