A man was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle on Liberty Parkway in Vestavia Hills.

The crash happened shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday on Liberty Parkway at Overton Road, off the Interstate 459 exit.

Vestavia Hills police Capt. Mike Keller said the man was outside of his vehicle and was struck as he walked around his vehicle and into the roadway.

First responders initially called in a transport helicopter but then took the man to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver who struck the man stopped. Keller said it appears to be accidental and no criminal charges are expected.

Investigators remained on the scene as of 9:30 p.m.
