Pedestrian killed on Birmingham’s Bessemer Road was fatally struck by street racer, police say

A 43-year-old pedestrian killed in Birmingham is believed to have been fatally struck by a street racer.

Geremy Earl Fantroy, whose legal name was Geremy Earl Picking, died Sunday night.

The deadly crash happened about 11:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Bessemer Road.

Fantroy was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:50 p.m.

Birmingham police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade on Thursday said the investigation shows that there was street racing taking place in the area where Fantroy was killed.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a stolen vehicle among the street racers. Officers activated their lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the driver of the stolen vehicle.

All the street racers fled the scene, she said, but not before one of them fatally struck Fantroy.

The unknown driver who struck Fantroy was not the motorist officers were pursuing, she said.

Under the newly passed Exhibition Driving Law, one of the street racers has been identified and charged with felony attempting to elude law enforcement, Wade said. There may be additional charges to follow.

No charges have been filed in connection with Fantroy’s death.

The investigation remains active.

Last month, according to court records made public this week, a Birmingham man was indicted in the 2022 death of a 14-year-old who was fatally struck while watching a street race, also on Bessemer Road.

A Jefferson County grand jury in September issued indictments for manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death against Zenardo LeGrant Marshall Jr., 20. The indictments were made public Wednesday.

Killed in the hit-and-run was Kamari DeShaun Adams. That 2022 crash happened at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, July 24, 2022, on Bessemer Road at Avenue R.

Anyone with information is Fantroy’s death is asked to call Birmingham police or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
