PBS star Darley Newman returns to Alabama for ‘Travels with Darley’

PBS star Darley Newman loves Alabama so much that she is coming back for a third visit.

Newman, who hosts the PBS series “Travels with Darley,” will be here beginning this Thursday, March 2, and will stay for a week filming an upcoming episode of her travel show.

This episode will emphasize the food of Alabama and the farmers and chefs who grow and prepare it.

Her itinerary includes stops at restaurants, farms and markets across the state, including Dauphin’s in Mobile, The Market at Pepper Place and Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, the Bright Star in Bessemer, the Irondale Café in Irondale, BDA Farm in Uniontown, the Rane Culinary Science Center and Acre in Auburn, Rama Jama’s in Tuscaloosa and several others.

“There’s a lot of depth to stories that can be covered in Alabama, so I’m excited to come back because this will be another chance to dive deeper,” Newman told AL.com this week.

“We won’t just cover restaurants and places but (also) how do these restaurants play a role in the local communities and where does the food come from, what’s growing in Alabama and what makes it distinctive.”

Newman previously visited Alabama for two episodes of “Travels with Darley” that featured the Alabama Civil Rights Trail and first aired in January 2022.

She also came here soon after her series started to film an episode that included Alabama along with several other places in the South. Her series is now in its 10th season.

“I really like the people of Alabama,” Newman said. “I’m from South Carolina. I feel like people are fun in Alabama. . . . People have a great spirit in Alabama, and they’re super-welcoming. And there’s a lot of great history and interesting history that people are happy to share.”

The Alabama episode of “Travels with Darley” will air during the 2024 season of her show, which is available on PBS stations and streaming sites, as well as through Ovation TV’s JOURNY, Wondrium, Create TV and Amazon Prime.
